NIH Addresses Dentists’ Role in Controlling Opioid Crisis

Nora Volkow, MD, director at the National Institute on Drug Abuse, and Martha J. Somerman, DDS, PhD, director, National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research, have released the commentary titled “The role of the oral health community in addressing the opioid overdose epidemic,” to discuss the key role dentists play in controlling the opioid crisis.

Published in the Journal of the American Dental Association, the document discusses how the National Institutes of Health (NIH) can work with the American Dental Association  to help reduce the misuse of opioids, highlights relevant NIH-funded research and ways to amplify the message in clinical practices and dental educational settings.
