Oral Health Professionals Well-Positioned to Spot Monkeypox Lesions

Oral lesions are a common symptom of monkeypox, and the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention wants oral health professionals to note the presence of suspicious lesions and refer patients for monkeypox testing. Monkeypox is known for its telltale rash, which can be found on any part of the body, including inside the oral cavity. Spread through direct skin-to-skin contact with an infected individual or fluid from monkeypox lesions—it is likely not subject to airborne transmission—more than 7,000 cases have been reported throughout the US.
