New TikTok Trend May Harm Tooth Enamel

A new TikTok video that shows viewers how to mix balsamic vinegar with sparkling water to create a purported unique and healthy alternative to soda has some oral health professionals furrowing their brows. And new research demonstrates this heavy dose of acidity can definitely lead to tooth erosion. The study authors looked at the effects of bottled water, flavored sparkling water, and plain sparkling water on tooth erosion. Extracted teeth were submerged in each water for 24 hours. Both sparkling waters harmed the tooth enamel, while the plain water left the tooth surface unchanged. The study was published in JADA Foundational Science. Click here to read more.
