Not All Treats Are Created Equal
The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD) reminds clinicians, parents and caregivers that it is important to pay attention to the types of treats children eat this Halloween. The AAPD emphasizes that when it comes to keeping children’s teeth healthy, not all treats are created equal. Noting that the longer dentition is exposed to sugars, the longer caries-causing bacteria have to feed on them, AAPD President Robert L. Delarosa, DDS, suggests that instead of gummy, sticky candy, dental teams and parents/caregivers may wish to promote candy that melts and disappears quickly, such as chocolate. Another suggestion is to ensure that children eat a well-balanced meal before trick or treating to reduce chances they will fill up on empty calories and sugar.
