Checklists May Improve Safety of Implant Surgery

The popularity of implant therapy continues to grow, as do resultant complications. In order to reduce the risk for human error, many industries, including aviation, use checklists to ensure each task is met. Kupka et al set out to determine whether evidence existed on the use of checklists in implant surgery. They were surprised to find only three papers on the subject. The authors have created their own safety checklist for use during implant surgery, and recommend additional research be undertaken to prove their validity during this procedure.
