Monkeypox Is Now a Public Health Emergency

With more than 6,000 diagnosed cases of monkeypox in the United States, the US Department of Health and Human services labeled the virus a public health emergency on August 4. Endemic to Africa, monkeypox is spreading more quickly than public health officials had predicted. The federal government has made more than 1 million doses of Jynneos, a smallpox vaccine that is also effective against monkeypox, available for high-risk individuals. The US Food and Drug Administration is also considering switching the administration of the vaccine from intramuscular to intradermal, which requires a smaller dose, enabling the current supply of Jynneos to reach more people.
