Medical-Dental Research Team Collaborate to Stop Vision Loss
Researchers from the College of Medicine and the College of Dental Medicine at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston received a Blue Sky Award to further their study on restoring eyesight to patients with macular degeneration. More than 10 million people in the United States have macular degeneration, and it is the leading cause of blindness among those age 60 and older. The cause of this eye disease is a draining energy supply to eye cells. The researchers hope that by providing mitochondria, which generate cell energy, with new templates for their DNA replication, they may be able to bypass the procedural errors that cause the energy supply to sputter out.
