Survey of Dentists Finds Increase in Anxiety, COVID-19 May Be to Blame

A survey of American dentists regarding their health found a steep increase in anxiety compared to 2003, with concerns regarding COVID-19 cited as a likely contributor. The stress of practicing during a global pandemic and the resultant shortage in available dental team staff members were noted as possible factors. Conducted by the American Dental Association, the survey included 20,000 dentists (both members and nonmembers) across the United States. Results also showed that most dentists (84%) reported experiencing work-related pain over the past year, and 63% disclosed they had a medical problem, with back issues (27%), high cholesterol (16%), anxiety (16%), and depression (13%) being the most commonly reported.
