A research team led by scientists from Single-Cell Center, Qingdao Institute of BioEnergy and Bioprocess Technology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Procter & Gamble Company (P&G) determined 24-72 hours of the cessation of oral hygiene results in a decrease in favorable oral bacteria and anti-inflammatory chemicals.

Forty study participants with different levels of naturally occurring gingivitis were asked to practice optimal oral hygiene for three weeks. The result was reduced gingivitis and a healthy baseline for the study. Researchers wrote, “gingivitis was then induced when their oral hygiene routine was interrupted over the course of four weeks. Restart of oral hygiene leads to recovery due to the reversible nature of gingivitis.”

Within 24-72 hours of the cessation of oral hygiene, the researchers found there was a steep decrease in the presence of multiple Rothia species, as well as the chemical betaine. There was also an increase in bacteria typically present in the oral cavity of patients with periodontitis.
