FDI Releases Resources on Sports Dentistry

The FDI World Dental Federation has released a series of sports dentistry courses for dentists, sports medicine physicians, and athletes. The series highlights the importance of good oral hygiene for optimal athletic performance.

Aside from oral injury or trauma that can occur in sports, the FDI reminds dentists and physicians of lesser-known effects, such as an increased risk for caries for athletes who consume energy drinks or supplements that contain added sugars and acidic ingredients. In addition, sports-related stress can lead to teeth grinding, xerostomia and dehydration.
