Oral Biologists Recognized for Research and Mentorship

Frank A. Scannapieco, DMD, PhD, a professor and chair of oral biology and associate dean for faculty and professional development, and Rosemary Dziak, PhD, a professor of oral biology, both at the University at Buffalo (UB) School of Dental Medicine, were honored by the American Association for Dental Research (AADR) and American Academy of Implant Dentistry for their outstanding efforts in the areas of research, training and mentorship.

Scannapieco received the 2020 Irwin D. Mandel Distinguished Mentoring Award from the AADR. The award provides national recognition for efforts to foster research training and career development of students, trainees and junior faculty. During his career, he has published more than 160 research articles and book chapters, and has received numerous awards. Scannapieco has been a member of UB faculty since 1991.

Dziak received the 2019 Isiah Lew Memorial Research Award from the American Academy of Implant Dentistry Foundation. She was honored for her significant contributions to the field of implant dentistry. Her research focuses on the physiology of bone cells, with studies on the development of bone cells, tissue engineering, and designing new materials for bone regeneration. Dziak holds two patents and has published more than 100 journal articles, book chapters and textbooks.
