The American Dental Association Health Policy Institute reveals a fascinating evolution in United States dentist retirement and career trends. Dentists are staying in the workforce longer, with the average retirement age reaching 69 in 2023, a significant rise from 64.7 in 2001. The average dental career now spans 41.8 years, 4 years longer than two decades ago.

Only 21% of dentists retire before age 65, and nearly 40% work more than 45 years. Meanwhile, the dental workforce is undergoing a generational transition, with more recent graduates entering the profession. The average age of dentists peaked at 50 in 2014 and has since decreased to 48.8, signaling a shift toward younger practitioners
