AI Takes the Dentist’s Chair

Artificial intelligence (AI) is making waves in dentistry, especially at the VA Greater Los Angeles Healthcare System, where researchers are pioneering a study to evaluate AI’s reliability in diagnosing dental issues. This groundbreaking initiative, aptly named “VALID,” aims to validate AI’s accuracy and trustworthiness in the clinical setting.

In a move set to revolutionize dental care, the VA Greater Los Angeles Healthcare System (VAGLAHS) is spearheading an innovative study, dubbed Validating Artificially Learned Intelligence in Dentistry, or “VALID.” This pilot project, led by Owais Farooqi, DDS, MDS, MPH, FACHE, chief of dental service at VAGLAHS, is designed to assess the safety, effectiveness, and trustworthiness of AI-assisted software in dental diagnostics. Inspired by a Stanford University course on AI in healthcare, Farooqi believes that just as the discovery of X-rays revolutionized dentistry, AI could similarly enhance dental expertise in identifying oral health problems.

The AI-assisted software programs, which recently received United States Food and Drug Administration approval, are being tested in a first-of-its-kind study within the VA Healthcare System. The team is meticulously collecting and organizing data to establish a gold standard against which AI’s accuracy will be measured. By validating AI’s role in dentistry, VAGLAHS is poised to enhance patient care and lead the way in technological innovation in healthcare. Click here to read more.
