App Helps Oral Health Professionals Navigate Medical Emergencies

0

Checklists, initially adopted by the United States military following a fatal plane crash, have evolved into invaluable tools across various sectors including aviation, nuclear energy, and medicine. Tufts University School of Dental Medicine (TUSDM) Professor Emeritus Morton Rosenberg, DMD, led a team to develop the “10 Minutes Saves a Life” app. This digital tool guides dental professionals through emergencies, covering scenarios from anxiety-induced hyperventilation to cardiac distress. The app, also useful for physicians administering moderate sedation, offers step-by-step instructions and facilitates direct-dialing 911. Since its 2018 launch, the app has garnered more than 100,000 downloads, with translations into multiple languages and approximately 900 daily users. It’s integrated into dental school curricula and TUSDM clinics. With an aging population and increasing sedation needs, the app aids in anesthesia dosage calculations. Patients’ comprehensive medical information assists oral health professionals in effective emergency responses, underlining the significance of thorough medical histories beyond routine dental checklists.
