New York Introduces Legislation to Get More Residents Into the Dental Chair

A package of bills has been introduced in the New York State legislature to tackle the shortage of oral health professionals. One bill aims to reduce barriers to licensure for out-of-state trained dentists. Another would add dentists to the state’s student loan repayment program for clinicians who provide treatment in underserved areas. Additionally, dental practices would be allowed to purchase more affordable health insurance plans through the state-run “Healthy New York” program. Residents covered by Medicaid who live outside of the New York City area face the most difficulty accessing dental care; it is hoped these bills will help to alleviate these barriers.
