New Research at University of Colorado Focuses on Improved Denture Technology
The Anschutz Acceleration Initiative (AAI) has selected nine final awardees out of 165 letters of intent and 56 full proposals to receive a portion of a $50 million commitment from the Anschutz Foundation. Among the top recipients is Jeffrey Stansbury, PhD, from the University of Colorado School of Dental Medicine (CU SDM). Stansbury and his team aim to revolutionize denture care using innovative bioactive materials. Their research integrates two novel dental technologies developed independently on the CU Anschutz Medical Campus. One involves strong photopolymers for three-dimensional (3D) inkjet printing, enabling efficient denture production. The other utilizes polymers to selectively eliminate bacteria, addressing common denture-related issues. This approach promises premium-quality dentures with antimicrobial properties. The AAI grant will facilitate the development of these dental products, enhancing affordability and clinical value, especially for underserved populations. The CU SDM will lead this initiative, becoming the first dental school with in-house 3D inkjet printing capability. The project underscores a commitment to advancing dental research and patient care. Additionally, the SDM plans to involve veterans, seniors, and patients with special healthcare needs in clinical trials to assess the new oral appliances’ impact on health and quality of life.
