Illinois Passes Electronic Prescription Requirement and Dental Practice Act Legislation

With support from the Illinois State Dental Society, Illinois Governor Pritzker signed into law legislation that simplifies the requirement for when medical and dental providers submit prescriptions for controlled substances and revises the state’s Dental Practice Act. Starting January 1, 2024, all healthcare providers who prescribe controlled substances Schedule II-IV must electronically submit prescriptions. Exceptions are outlined, such as for providers issuing fewer than 150 prescriptions within 1 year. The changes to the Dental Practice Act enable military dentists and dental hygienists to use a simplified licensing process and stipulates procedures for notifying patients when a dental office closes.
