
Partnership Enables Connecticut Dental Assistants to Expand Their Skill Sets
Traditionally, dental assistants who wanted to expand their skill sets to include capturing X-rays needed to pass a national examination. A partnership between the University of Connecticut School of Dental Medicine (UConn-SODM) and the Connecticut State Dental Association has led to the passage of legislation that allows dental assistants to pass a state competency assessment instead of a national exam. UConn-SODM will design the assessment no later than January 1, 2025. According to Steven Lepowsky, DDS, the dean of the UConn-SODM, this change provides a cost-effective and self-paced option for dental assistants who wish to expand their skill sets.
