Dental Hygiene Students Join Nursing Students in Diabetes Care Simulation
Dental hygiene students and nursing students from the University of New Mexico participated in an interprofessional diabetes care simulation. The program focuses on justice and equity in the care of patients with diabetes, who number more than 34 million in the United States. The hands-on education program included volunteer patients who had different jobs, cultural and health backgrounds, immigration statuses, and levels of health literacy. After interviewing patients, the student clinicians gathered for a debriefing session and strategized treatment approaches. Designed to encourage culturally competent medical and dental care, the experience was open-ended without a set curriculum. Click here to read more.
