Study Finds Periodontal Therapy Is a Failure for Heavy Smokers
A study conducted by researchers from Aarhus University in Denmark discovered that heavy smokers who underwent regular nonsurgical periodontal therapy received little to no benefit. Published in the Journal of Dental Research, the study showed that heavy smokers with the most severe form of periodontitis gained no benefit while heavy smokers with moderate periodontitis experienced about a 50% reduction in the number of affected sites after receiving a year of nonsurgical periodontal therapy every 3 months. Study authors suggest that more focus be placed on tobacco cessation programs. Click here to read more.
