One in Four Americans Loses a Loved One to COVID-19

A new study conducted at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences Office of Community Health & Research found that one in four Americans has lost a loved one due to COVID-19 as of May 17, 2022. Published in OMEGA–Journal of Death and Dying, the study revealed the risk of losing a loved one due to SARS-CoV-2 was highest among the following groups:

  • Those age 60 and older
  • All racial/ethnic minority groups except Asian Americans
  • Married individuals
  • Those who did not receive healthcare in the past year due to cost
  • Individuals who themselves had a COVID-19 infection
