Board of Infectious Disease Physicians Recommend Ceasing COVID-19 Testing Among Asymptomatic
The Board of Directors of the Society for Healthcare Epidemiology of America recently released new recommendations for COVID-19. The group suggests that asymptomatic patients need not be routinely tested for COVID-19 in hospitals and other healthcare facilities because there is a lack of evidence demonstrating that such testing decreases transmission. On the other hand, research does show that routine COVID-19 testing increases wait times in emergency departments and comes with a hefty cost to patients, approximately $50 per test. The board would like to see more research done on the effectiveness of routine testing in reducing transmission but at this juncture asserts that ceasing routine COVID-19 testing is the most prudent.
