Dental Organizations Pledge to Better Educate Oral Health Professionals on Nutrition
As part of the White House’s call to action to end hunger in the United States, several dental organizations have pledged to take steps to ensure future oral health professionals are better prepared to educate their patients on nutrition. Representatives of the National Dental Association, Case Western University’s School of Dental Medicine, Children’s Oral Health Institute, and Society of American Indian Dentists committed to supporting education on nutrition as a competency required for all healthcare fields, incorporating lifestyle interventions and chronic disease education into curriculum, requiring that one faculty member has knowledge of nutritional science in all dental programs, increasing continuing education requirements for nutrition, and including questions regarding hunger, nutrition, and lifestyle on board competency exams.
