Universal Coronavirus Vaccine May Be on the Horizon
A study recently published in Cell investigated the impact of the COVID-19 vaccine on antibody response. Researchers found that previous experience with any type of coronavirus influenced the vaccine’s ability to not only address the well-known spike protein associated with the novel coronavirus, but also additional proteins shared by a variety of coronaviruses. The team, composed of scientists from the Translational Genomics Research Institute and Northern Arizona University, suggest that these results may support the development of a new vaccine that would target all types of coronaviruses, including those responsible for basic respiratory infections.
