Some Florida Hospitals See Higher COVID-19 Admissions Than Since the Pandemic Began
With the easily transmissible Delta variant and large populations of unvaccinated residents, Florida hospitals are seeing the highest admission rates due to COVID-19 than ever before during the pandemic. Public health officials had hoped to avoid high hospitalization rates even with low vaccination numbers, as many of the unvaccinated are young and healthy. However, this did not materialize. Many hospitals across Florida, including Jacksonville and Daytona Beach, are seeing higher numbers than they experienced last summer when Florida experienced some of the worst COVID-19 outbreaks in the country. Approximately one-fifth of all new COVID-19 cases over the past 2 weeks have originated in the sunshine state.
