Life Expectancy in the US Drops 2 Years Due to COVID-19

From 2018 to 2020, the average life expectancy in the United States dropped 2 years from 79 to 77. This is the most significant decrease seen since World War II when more than 290,000 Americans were killed. The COVID-19 pandemic has thus far taken more than 600,000 American lives. The decline in life expectancy was more than two times higher for minorities than whites in the US. Published in The BMJ, the study authors noted that while the US has excellent hospitals and highly regarded scientists, the country struggles to ensure access to quality healthcare for all of its residents.
