SARS-CoV-2 Relative Has Longstanding Presence in Bats

A relative of the novel coronavirus, RaTG13, has been present in bats for the past 40 to 70 years, according to new research published in Nature Biology. The Scottish study suggests that SARS-CoV-2 has likely been poised to crossover to humans for decades. While many theories have been floated regarding the origin of COVID-19, including its creation via bioengineering or in a laboratory, this study cites a natural progression from bats to other wildlife and finally to humans. The study authors assert that understanding how viruses transmit from animals to humans is key to improved monitoring and prevention of future pandemics. Read more here.
