The American Academy of Periodontology (AAP) has selected Yvonne Kapila, DDS, PhD, as the recipient of the inaugural Sunstar Innovation Grant. The $30,000 grant supports an AAP member whose research shows significant potential to advance the science and practice of periodontics.
Kapila’s research project, “Natural Bacteriocins as Pre/Pro-Biotics to Promote Oral Health and Prevent Periodontal Disease,” aims to build a foundation for using pre- or probiotics containing nisin (commonly used as a food preservative) or nisin-secreting bacteria to promote a healthy oral microbiome and prevent pathogenic biofilms associated with periodontal disease. She will present the results of the study at a future AAP meeting.
Beginning this year, Sunstar will award six research grants to select AAP members over a 3-year period. For more information, contact the AAP’s Scientific Affairs Manager Stephanie Heffner at stephanie@perio.org.
