Classification criteria for Sjögren syndrome have been developed, validated and approved by the American College of Rheumatology (ACR) and European League Against Rheumatism (EULAR). The unified criteria will be used to determine patients’ suitability for participation in clinical trials related to the syndrome — in which white blood cells attack salivary and lacrimal glands, resulting in xerostomia, dry eyes, fatigue and chronic pain.

The classification effort was led by researchers at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) School of Dentistry and School of Medicine, working with colleagues from Oklahoma, Japan, South America, France, Italy and the United Kingdom. “The landscape of Sjögren syndrome has changed in recent years, due to both the recently validated disease activity indices and availability of new therapeutic agents,” reports lead author Caroline Shiboski, DDS, PhD, MPH, chair of the Department of Orofacial Sciences at UCSF School of Dentistry. “We developed a single set of data-driven consensus classification criteria for primary Sjögren syndrome that performed well in validation and is well-suited as entry criteria for clinical trials.”

The new unified criteria supersede those published by the ACR in 2012 and the American European Consensus Group in 2002. Available at bit.ly/sjcriteria, the article announcing the criteria and process that led to their adoption appeared online in Arthritis & Rheumatology, an ACR publication, and the EULAR journal Annals of the Rheumatic Diseases.
