Shils Awards Laud Dental Leaders

The Dr. Edward B. Shils Entrepreneurial Fund, a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting innovative leadership in health care, celebrated people, organizations and programs at its October awards ceremony in Philadelphia.

The Dr. Edward B. Shils Entrepreneurial Fund, a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting innovative leadership in health care, celebrated people, organizations and programs at its October awards ceremony in Philadelphia. Shils Awards were presented to:

  • Laurie M. McCauley, DDS, MS, PhD, for her leadership as dean of the University of Michigan School of Dentistry and commitment to caries prevention research
  • Carolyn Primus, PhD, president of Avalon Biomed, for developing products for fixed prosthodontics, orthodontics and endodontics that help advance the profession
  •  Othman Shibly, DDS, MS, director of the postgraduate program in periodontics at the University at Buffalo School of Dental Medicine, for leadership as an educator and participation in medical missions to help Syrian refugees in Jordan, Turkey and Lebanon
  • Stephen and Sandra Sheller 11th Street Family Health Services, for providing health care services to residents of public housing along Philadelphia’s 11th Street Corridor

Rounding out the awards, Lawrence A. Tabak, DDS, PhD, principal deputy director and deputy ethics councilor of the National Institute of Health, was recognized with the Shils- Meskin Award for his leadership and advocacy for the advancement of dental research. Also feted was Sidney Whitman, DDS, director of pediatric dentistry at Newark Beth Israel Medical Center, who received the Special Recognition Award for his dedication to improving the oral health of children in New Jersey and the Delaware Valley.
