Research from the National Institutes of Health confirms that a large number of antibodies are released following infection with SARS-CoV-2. Appearing in Science, the paper, “Prevalent, Protective, and Convergent IgG Recognition of SARS-CoV-2 Non-RBD Spike Epitopes,” suggests that patients who recover from COVID-19 produce a strong immune response. The investigators note that 84% of the antibodies attacked other parts of the spike protein than just the receptor-binding domain — news that bodes well for developing an immunization booster shot or vaccine that’s more effective against variants.
