The National Association of Dental Laboratories (NADL) is advocating for dentists to partner with certified laboratories and technicians to ensure quality standards are met that support safe and effective care. According to the NADL, certification standards provide assurance of the safety, predictability and functionality of lab-fabricated prostheses. Working with certified lab professionals provides clinicians and patients with the peace of mind that materials and processes used to fabricate restorations meet or exceed regulations and industry guidelines.

The National Board for Certification in Dental Laboratory Technology (NBC) administers the Certified Dental Technician program, which is the only certification for dental technicians recognized by the American Dental Association (ADA). This designation requires lab technicians to demonstrate knowledge and skill in one of six specialty areas, such as ceramics, complete dentures or orthodontics. The Certified Dental Laboratory program, also administered by NBC and recognized by NADL, ADA and the American College of Prosthodontists, requires laboratories to comply with recommended infection control, training, equipment, facility and case management standards.
