Biomaterials Researcher Honored for Stem Cell Regenerative Techniques

The International Association for Dental Research (IADR) honored Huakun Xu, PhD, MS, a professor at the University of Maryland School of Dentistry (UMSOD) in Baltimore, with its 2018 Isaac Schour Memorial Award.

The International Association for Dental Research (IADR) honored Huakun Xu, PhD, MS, a professor at the University of Maryland School of Dentistry (UMSOD) in Baltimore, with its 2018 Isaac Schour Memorial Award at the IADR General Session in London. The award recognizes outstanding scientific contributions in the anatomical sciences, including tissue engineering, tissue regeneration and stem cell research as it relates to the oral, dental or craniofacial complex. A founder of the Biomaterials and Tissue Engineering Lab at UMSOD, Xu and colleagues developed the first generation of injectable, in-situ setting, load-bearing and resorbable scaffolds for stem cell encapsulation and bone tissue engineering. Xu, who has published nearly 250 papers and has more than 10 patents and pending patent applications, was also the 2013 recipient of the American Association for Dental Research/IADR William J. Gies Award.
