Columbia University’s College of Dental Medicine’s new Center for Precision Dental Medicine uses big data to guide patient care, transform dental education, and discover new ways to comanage chronic diseases. Equipped with a patient care suite and 48 operatories bristling with the latest technology to help advance the connection between oral and systemic health, the New York-based center links electronic medical and dental records to allow interdisciplinary teams to treat patients based on comprehensive health information. The center features dental chairs that measure data associated with patient stress to help advance the university’s goal of providing personalized dental care. As part of its progressive approach to practice management, the facility also uses radio-frequency identification technology to track equipment use and patient wait times.
