CE Article Highlights Importance of Maintenance to Restorative Success

An organized and strategic maintenance program is integral to the longevity, stability and esthetics of dental restorations — and vital to patient satisfaction. Therefore clinicians would be wise to discuss a maintenance plan during the initial consultation rather than waiting until the restoration is complete. That is the topic of a two-unit Decisions in Dentistry continuing education article by Donald A. Curtis, DMD, FACP — a professor in the Department of Preventive and Restorative Dental Sciences at the University of California San Francisco School of Dentistry — and Avinash S. Bidra, BDS, MS, FACP — a boardcertified maxillofacial prosthodontist and director of the Prosthodontics Residency Program at the University of Connecticut School of Dental Medicine, Farmington.

The article, “Maintenance Considerations for Prosthodontic Patients,” was developed in collaboration with the American College of Prosthodontists and is supported through an unrestricted educational grant from Colgate. Curtis and Bidra provide insight into the landmark Clinical Practical Guidelines for Recall and Maintenance of Patients with Tooth-Borne and Implant-Borne Dental Restorations, which helped transform the simple notion of maintenance programs into patient-focused maintenance protocols.
