According to the Organization for Safety, Asepsis and Prevention (OSAP), dentists write almost 26 million prescriptions for antibiotics each year —10% of all outpatient antibiotic prescriptions. To help clinicians avoid overprescribing, OSAP and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) are offering a pair of resources:
- A checklist to guide dentists through pretreatment, prescribing and staff education, available at bit.ly/2bExtzG
- A “do’s and don’ts” list for patients, at bit.ly/2bwFlQo
In a deeper look at best practices, “Considerations for Responsible Antibiotic Use in Dentistry,” by OSAP and CDC experts, is published in the August issue of The Journal of the American Dental Association.
