High-Puff Vapes May Become More Dangerous Over Time

New research finds that heavily used disposable e-cigarettes can accumulate significantly higher levels of harmful aldehydes, potentially increasing users’ exposure to toxic compounds.

A new study led by researchers at the University of California, Riverside, suggests that disposable electronic cigarettes may become more chemically hazardous as they are used, raising additional concerns about the health effects of vaping.

Published in ACS Omega, the study examined liquid remaining in popular high-puff disposable e-cigarettes after use and compared it with fresh, unused versions of the same products. Researchers focused on aldehydes, a group of compounds formed when vape liquids are heated during use. Several aldehydes, including formaldehyde, methylglyoxal (MGO), and glyoxal (GO), were found at significantly higher concentrations in heavily used devices.

The findings indicate that repeated heating cycles and prolonged use may alter the chemical profile of e-liquids, leading to the accumulation of potentially harmful byproducts. Of particular concern was MGO, which demonstrated substantial toxicity in laboratory testing. When human lung cells were exposed to the compound, researchers observed cell damage, increased oxidative stress, disruption of cellular structure, and interference with energy production. MGO was found to be considerably more toxic than acetaldehyde, another commonly studied aldehyde.

Researchers noted that individuals using high-puff devices near the end of their lifespan may be exposed to higher concentrations of toxic compounds than users of freshly opened products. The study also found that chemical levels varied among brands, suggesting product design may influence toxicant accumulation. Click here to read more.
