UT Health San Antonio Dental and Speech Pathology Students Join Forces to Tackle Dysphagia
Dental and speech-language pathology students are joining forces to improve care for patients with swallowing disorders. A unique interprofessional training program equips students to screen for dysphagia and identify oral health issues, promoting better outcomes for patients at risk of serious complications.
The link between oral health and swallowing disorders has inspired a collaborative initiative between the UT Health San Antonio School of Dentistry and School of Health Professions. This innovative program brings third-year dental students and second-year speech-language pathology students together to screen and treat dysphagia, a swallowing disorder that affects millions, particularly older adults. Dysphagia can increase the risk of serious health issues, including aspiration pneumonia, making preventive care and comprehensive treatment essential.
During a hands-on session on October 9, 170 students from both fields were divided into small groups. Dental students taught their speech-language peers how to conduct oral health screenings, while speech-language pathology students demonstrated swallowing screening protocols. Through this role-sharing exercise, students gained a deeper understanding of each other’s expertise and the essential interplay between oral health and dysphagia management.
By understanding each other’s roles, these future clinicians are better prepared to address complex cases involving both oral health and swallowing disorders.
