DIY TikTokers Are at it Again With ‘Fashion Braces’

Fake braces may look trendy, but they come with serious health risks. These nonmedical appliances can cause lasting damage to the dentition and gingiva while raising risk of infection.

Dental professionals are raising the alarm about a growing trend called “fashion braces,” which are decorative, nonmedical appliances applied at home, often promoted on platforms like TikTok. While these faux braces may appeal to some for their low cost and trendy look, dentists warn they pose serious risks. From exposure to toxic materials such as cadmium and lead in the hardware to nonmedical adhesives that can loosen and create choking hazards, these braces can lead to severe oral health issues. The American Association of Orthodontists (AAO) recently discussed these dangers, noting potential heavy metal poisoning, infections, and permanent tooth damage. The AAO also noted the danger of “basement braces,” when patients seek orthodontic treatment from unlicensed providers due to the reduced cost. Click here to read more.
