April Is Oral Cancer Awareness Month

In April, the importance of early detection, education, and support is highlighted during Oral Cancer Awareness Month. Oral cancer often goes unnoticed in its early stages, making it a dangerous silent threat. Statistics from the Oral Cancer Foundation reveal that in 2024 alone, around 58,500 Americans will be diagnosed, resulting in more than 8,000 deaths, with a 5-year survival rate of only 43%. Oral health professionals are urged to stay vigilant in screenings and patient education, as early detection significantly improves survival rates. A significant link has emerged between oral cancer and human papillomavirus (HPV), particularly among young people, with HPV causing around 70% of oropharynx cancers according to the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. This underscores the need for awareness and proactive measures, including education on HPV risks and prevention. Oral health professionals should discuss oral cancer signs and symptoms during check-ups, encouraging regular self-examinations. Promoting the HPV vaccine is also crucial, as it can prevent cancer.
