Study Shows Many Pregnant Women Are Unaware of Importance of Oral Health

Oral health professionals are well aware that poor oral health negatively impacts both mothers and infants and that the provision of dental care during pregnancy is safe. However, myriad studies continue to show that many pregnant women are unaware of the importance of oral health in short- and long-term outcomes for both mother and baby. A recent survey of 200 pregnant women in Poland, with more than half reporting advanced education levels, found that 20% considered dental care unimportant because they did not have any current oral health problems, while 16.5% noted they did not believe that oral hygiene was important during pregnancy.
