Data Show That Breakthrough COVID-19 Infections Are Rare

0

The nonprofit organization, Kaiser Family Foundation (KFF), did some digging to ascertain the prevalence of breakthrough COVID-19 infections in the United States. According to the KFF, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention stopped monitoring breakthrough infections on May 1, so this new information was culled from state websites and data collected from the Johns Hopkins University COVID-19 dashboard and the US Department of Health and Human Services. Findings include:

  • For those who have been fully vaccinated against COVID-19, hospitalization and death due to the novel coronavirus are very rare: less than 1% across the nation.
  • Death rates due to SARS-CoV-2 are approximately zero among vaccinated individuals. All states except Arkansas and Michigan, which both reported a 0.01% death rate among the vaccinated, have noted zero deaths in this population.
  • Nine out of 10 COVID-19-related hospitalizations and deaths are among those who are not vaccinated or those who have not completed the vaccination series. This statistic remained the same across all states that were reporting breakthrough COVID-19 cases.
