States With a Spring Surge of COVID-19 Cases Start to See Welcome Declines
While COVID-19 case numbers were falling across many parts of the United States, some states experienced a spring surge. States located along the Great Lakes, particularly, Michigan; parts of New England, especially Maine, Massachusetts, and New Hampshire; Delaware and Maryland, Arizona and Colorado; and Oregon and Washington, to name a few, all had troubling high numbers of new cases in mid-April. Fortunately, the tide has changed, and many of these areas are experiencing declining numbers of new cases, hospitalizations, and deaths. Public health experts suggest that as more people are vaccinated against SARS-CoV-2, communities as a whole see big benefits. Additionally, warmer weather and a high number (nearly 100 million) of Americans who have recovered from COVID-19 and have some level of immunity are also helping to deter the spread.
