Research Is Underway to Find the ‘Tamiflu’ for COVID-19
Scientists at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) are hard at work trying to create a pill that would effectively treat COVID-19 illness, just as Tamiflu does for influenza. The goal is an oral medication that would neutralize SARS-CoV-2 at a low cost and with few side effects. While it may seem like searching for a unicorn, NIH researchers are hopeful, but note the journey toward such a pill is long. They are currently searching for a molecular vulnerability in SARS-CoV-2, which then leads to the trial-and-error process of seeing which medications may attach to this exposed vulnerability.
