More Than 20 States Allow Oral Health Professionals to Administer COVID-19 Vaccines
As efforts to improve COVID-19 vaccination rates ramp up, more states are allowing oral health professionals to administer these immunizations after completing a certain amount of training. Currently, specially trained dental hygienists are able to inoculate the public against SARS-CoV-2 in Connecticut, Idaho, Kentucky, Massachusetts, Maryland, Nevada, New York, Ohio, Rhode Island, and South Carolina, according to the American Dental Hygienists’ Association. Dentists, with appropriate training, are able to administer COVID-19 vaccinations in more than 20 states. Most oral health professionals are joining their medical colleagues in public health clinics and mass vaccination sites to help increase the number of those protected against COVID-19, as opposed to giving the immunizations in private practice settings.
