COVID-19 Poses Significant Barrier to Kids Receiving Preventive Oral Healthcare
Results from the C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital National Poll on Children’s Health reveal that 40% of parents have not sought professional preventive oral healthcare services for their children since the start of the global pandemic. The reasons given for such avoidance include worry about transmission of SARS-CoV-2, closure of many dental offices at the start of the pandemic, and expense of care. Additionally, approximately 4% of parents with private insurance reported difficulty securing dental appointments for their children; this percentage rose to 15% for those covered by public insurance such as Medicaid.
