Severity of COVID-19 Illness Does Not Seem to Impact Long-Term Side Effects

In an examination of patients who have recovered from COVID-19, researchers found that severity of initial illness did not appear to correlate with the presence of lingering fatigue, ill health, or breathlessness. Published in the Annals of the American Thoracic Society, the study included 153 participants whose recovery from COVID-19 was followed for 75 days post-diagnosis. While these symptoms were commonly seen among the patient cohort, their appearance was not associated with how sick patients initially were with COVID-19. The authors suggest that healthcare providers should look for long-term health effects among all individuals who have recovered from the infection, regardless of the severity of illness.
