New studies demonstrate a relationship between blood type and COVID-19 susceptibility and/or severity. A Danish study found that individuals with O blood type were at a lower risk of contracting COVID-19 than those with other blood types. This study did not show any relationship between disease severity and blood type. However, a smaller Canadian study did suggest that COVID-19 patients with A or AB blood types were at higher risk of needing breathing assistance, acute kidney disease, and longer hospitalization times in intensive care units than COVID-19 patients with O or B blood types.
