Cost Announced for COVID-19 Treatment Remdesivir

The price for a 5-day course of the antiviral drug remdesivir—which has shown to reduce hospital stays for patients with severe COVID-19 illness—is $2,340. This cost is less than the $5,080 price tag recommended by the Institute for Clinical and Economic Review. The reduction may be related to the introduction of an inexpensive steroid, dexamethasone, as an effective COVID-19 treatment. Gilead, the manufacturer of remdesivir, has spent more than $1 billion on the drug’s development. The United States Department of Health and Human Services has procured more than 500,000 doses of remdesivir for use across the nation’s hospitals.  Read more here.
