Georgia Dentist Sues Insurance Company for Refusal to Cover Lost Business

Roy Johnson, DDS, and his private dental practice Windy Hill Dentistry in Marietta, Georgia, filed a class-action lawsuit on May 8 against his insurance carrier, the Hartford Financial Services Group, after it refused to reimburse Johnson for his claims of lost business due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The insurance company claims the losses are not reimbursable because there is no physical loss, such as with a hurricane, flood, or fire. Johnson’s lawyer, former Georgia Governor Roy Barnes, asserts the losses incurred by the closure of Windy Hill do represent a physical loss and that the insurance carrier is obligated to cover such losses after his client diligently paid his premiums.
